Here's an article about affirmations and why they don't always work for us.

A good question...article on affirmations
Welcome to 2009...

As we head into the new year, we as a World are experiencing highs and lows in extreme amounts. And it has
effected each of us in our own way. One means I noticed just in my small part of the World is that folks seemed to
return to a more simple way of life...appreciating time with family around the dinner table rather than racing all over
the planet, attempting to beat time.

This got me thinking in a direction that had previously eluded me so directly: thinking about
Gratitude.

Many many times I have passed over articles about gratitude and never though I would actually be
writing one.
Actually, I had always considered myself a logical, thought-minded, even negative person.   Gratitude was for the
spiritual people. That wasn't me.

No, I was someone who saw one way of doing things typically; a very black and white, to the point person. I would
also beat myself up at every possible chance. If I made a right turn instead of a left, I was the stupidest person on
the planet. If I was even two minutes late, I was pathetic. If I didn’t get the thing I wanted, it was because I didn’t
deserve it. As anyone who has ever done something like this, beat themselves up, or even someone reading this could
imagine, it’s a dark, heavy, and negative way to live. And yet, why change? It was who I was and I saw it as the best
it would ever be.

I can honestly say from experience that I lived my life from the outside-in. Life threw me something, I fought. I
ranted. I raved. The worst part...I was one of those who spent a good 20 years searching for answers through books,
therapy, quests, you name it. (By the way...key word here is searching...not finding. Big difference, folks.).

When I came across EFT the first time it was actually while I was in "search" mode and walked right past it,
unaffected. It wasn't until a few years later that EFT became a "found" factor in my life. Somehow, I was more open
at that time and it sunk in...thankfully! For, as I began to work on my issues, to open my heart to the parts of life
which, actually, previously annoyed me...things changed.

For instance, as I was doing research for my manuals, I continued, out of habit I guess, to pass over the topic of
Gratitude. About this same time, I was working with Law of Attraction stuff as well as EFT. I was listening to an
audio by Michael Losier, who was discussing a technique for appreciating money. He suggested that every time we
write a check to pay a bill, we thank the bill for giving us whatever it gave us. So I thank the mortgage for a roof
overhead and the credit card bill for giving me credit to purchase things I purchased and so forth. It took awhile,
honestly, though paying bills finally became a less painful, less stressful task. And whether or not it worked for
bringing in more gratitude or more funds to pay the bills with (like attracting like), my attitude definitely shifted.

Other things happened. Events I previously termed "flukes" or "coincidences" brought a good feeling into my heart;
a new friend, someone who is into energy work taking a few minutes to talk. At night, it’d go to sleep with
appreciation in mind –work, friends, love, passion, etc. And on days that were a bit tougher, maybe just having a
roof overhead or a shower was a blessing that day. It didn’t have to be a hard process or over thought.

I finally reached a point of making a gratitude journal, keeping track daily of things that I was grateful for. And again,
while it took time and effort to stay with it, I felt much lighter in every aspect of my life. I even smiled more.

Now and then, I still have a tough day. One morning not long ago I was tense and in a hurry and made that right
instead of a left turn and the old familiar words came flying out “you idiot! Are you really that stupid!” And  almost
in an instant, I heard myself return with, “I’m just tired. It’s a mistake. It’s okay. Let’s turn around and start again.”
And the day just turned for me from that point on.

And so here is my first article on gratitude…the thing I avoided for so long. And now pass on to you, the reader,
with
gratitude…and the final thought that it is truly never too late to feel good about this life and yourself!

Happy Tapping, all! E.J.

This is an amazing poem on Gratitude:

Be Thankful

Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire,
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don’t know something
For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations
Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge
Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes
They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you’re tired and weary
Because it means you’ve made a difference.

It is easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks.

GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles and they can become your blessings.

Many of us struggle with why we aren't where we want to be in our lives whether it's happier, in a better
job, or a different mindset. The answer is already within us. We just need to identify it and take action.
There are five common beliefs that keep us stuck including not being open to the experience, being
judgmental, blaming, having expectations, or simply we don't want to change. The choice to change is ours
and this is a very empowering point.

When Things Don't Work

At times, clients who experience rapid success to their painful issues may experience a phenomenon called
the Apex Effect where they may justify their issue, say it was never really a problem, deny they even had a
problem, and so forth. One common definition refers to the client experiencing cognitive dissonance,
where the experience of the behavior counters their internal attitude and causes any number of issues to
arise. The practitioner has a number of resources they can use to assist the client through the process and
maintain the value of the EFT technique.
